We visited the smallest state in size, Rhode Island. Did you know it only takes 1 hour to drive across the entire state? We flew into Providence, RI.
After learning about the Mashpee Wampanoag Native Americans through Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi: Truth and the Turkey Tale, we were excited to try Wampanoag cuisine at Sly Fox Den Too and got to met Chef Sherry Pocknett.
We ordered the Three-Sisters Succotash soup, Fire Cracker Shrimp, Smoked Scallops, and Indian Pudding. We wanted to try the Quahog Chowdah, but they were all out. The Blueberry Slump from Taste the Nation also looked amazing, but it wasn’t on the menu today.
Our kid’s favorite was the Firecracker Shrimp which being from the South tasted like the best version of shrimp and grits I’ve ever had. Mmm, mmm, mmm so good! 😋 The shrimps were large and succulent with a spicy garlic seasoning but barely spicy as even our youngest enjoyed it. Very flavorful!
I personally enjoyed the Three-Sisters Succotash soup most. It looked simple and light, but it was packed full of wholesome, vegetable goodness (select corn, squash, beans, and kale) that I felt healthier after having chowed it down.
The smoked scallops dish was flavorful, but the scallops were a bit dry and the rice a bit too hard or maybe undercooked (we probably just didn’t have it on a good day).
The Indian pudding had a corneal and molasses base which was interesting and worth trying but the kids were mostly just eating the ice cream.
All in all, definitely worth the trip to try the cuisine and passion of Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe member Chef Sherry Pocknett!
